It's not a fun process for me.Īs long as you're happy with it, then that's all that matters. I love 3DCoat but not for modeling from scratch as I hage retoping very much. I find I can create something like a spacecraft or crane a lot more quickly in MOI3D then in Silo3D or 3DCoat. 3dCoat's voxel capabilities work perfectly with boolean style modeling techniques. Then again, you can always retopologize a nurbs surface if you really needed to go back to polygons properly, but in that case I would probably recommend using a sculpting package like Zbrush or 3dCoat instead of nurbs to begin with. I don't believe there is any perfect mathematical solution for every type of situation, so I would only resort to nurbs at the final stages of a project if need be. The results of that clever maxscript algorithm are very nice when dealing with most curved surfaces, but I found you tend to run into issues when you have a more complex or less symmetrical nurbs surface. In 3dsmax, there is a very nice maxscript which can convert the triangulated results of a nurbs surface to a clean, topologically sound polygon quad mesh. The problem is there is no clean route back to polygons once you convert the mesh to nurbs surfaces. You can begin a model with subD, using the tools available for that modeling type, then convert the mesh to nurbs to continue editing the object with those tools. I believe it's second only to Rhino in terms of integrated features for this type of work.įormZ is another cad package which has some very interesting interchangeability between subD modeling and nurbs surfaces. However, if the end result of the design is destined for computer-to-product fabrication by means of certain machine-driven workflows, then NURBS modeling is the way to go, no doubt, and MOI is a very good choice for such a job. This is also true when it comes to texturing (UV Unwrapping). Polygonal mesh construction, in such cases, provides much more precise control over the object topology and the resolution of the output can be controlled to a large extent by the user, not an algorithm. Usually this information gets translated at the end of the pipeline to polygonal data before it's output anyway. Actually, I would recommend it! When dealing with most 3d data output in digital format, or even some real world output in the case of 3d printing, most pipelines are not capable of talking directly to the polylines of a NURBS object. However, in the case of digital rendering, animating, or even 3d printing where every 3d object gets converted into triangles in the end, I prefer to stick with polygon modeling and subdivision surfaces. Nurbs modeling has it's purpose in manufacturing, particularly if you are designing technical models which will eventually get sent out to a CNC router or milling machine. Some videos are speedup but all techniques and principles are explained in real time.I agree for the most part with cjd's assessment. Hope you’ll have a lot of fun using Moi! Can’t wait to see your next creations! Cheers!Īll videos have voice comments. First I will introduce those basic principles that are used 90 percent of time and after that I will go in more depth and demonstrate also how you can combine power of polygonal modeling tools to boost your productivity and make process of creating any kind of shape super fun and enjoyable.

After we learn those I will demonstrate different ways on how you can combine all those operations to create few unique 3d assets. In first part of this tutorial I am covering basics like navigation, UI and every single tool and its function.

Moment of inspiration because nothing is on your way while you create. Super fast UI and way of working is something that define name of this application. Moi3D is small but super powerful CAD modeling application used by top industry professionals across different fields.
